Most people will walk into a furniture store, see a set of furniture and just buy the room. We’ll take a living room for instance; a room package usually consists of items such as a couch, a loveseat, an oversized chair, two end tables, a coffee table, and the occasional pair of lamps. Buying a room doesn’t take much effort; after all, it looks good in the showroom and we’re not even considering the quality and comfort. However, when it comes down to it, it’s a room someone else put together and it may not even fit your personal style. (Or make it through the front door for that matter!)
In the greater scheme of things, your goal isn’t just filling up a room with a bunch of furniture – you are building a statement. How you live, what you like, your personal style, and what makes you the most comfortable should all be taken into consideration.
So let us push the reset button. Now walk into a furniture store and purchase your big piece – either the sofa or the loveseat (be sure to measure first!). Search for one in a neutral solid color – beige, brown, black, etc – because all your color will come from the additional things you will add later, such as the accessories, the pillows, and the drapes. Sit on it, lay on it, roll around on it if you must but make absolutely sure it is comfortable. Pull up the cushion and take it to the window or better yet outside, with permission, to get an accurate look at the color. Check out the frame and find out what it’s made out of. The best frame is made out of kiln-dried hardwood. Really spend some time deciding and ignore the looks of the salesman. It is one of those expensive purchases that you tend to keep for a long time.
Next, hunt down two accent chairs to balance out the sofa (they can be either a solid color or a pattern). It’s nice because your furniture doesn’t have to be matchy-matchy anymore. The loveseat doesn’t have to match the sofa and even the end tables don’t have to match! Enjoy the hunt, go to different stores, take your time and look around – a coffee table, an ottoman and lamps will all be found eventually.
Every item you buy now will be personal and something that you love, and with the right pieces, you will have a style that is versatile, changeable, totally you, and you will build the room of your dreams in Lebanon, TN .
